Matobo Rural District Council is a Local Authority in Matabeleland South Province. The Council was formed in 1993, after the amalgamation of South Matobo Rural Council and Matobo District Council in accordance with Rural District Councils’ Act [Chapter 8 of 1988], which was revised in 1996 culminating in the Rural District Councils Act [Chapter 29:13]. Matobo RDC has a population of around 93 991 which comprises of 45 018 males and 48 973 females as per the census of 2012.
The district is 7 220km2 in area and it is bound to the east by Gwanda, west by Bulilima and Mangwe district, to the north by Bulawayo City Council, north east by UMzingwane district, Umguza to the north west and Botswana to the south. It has nineteen communal, one grazing and five new resettlement wards .Its major economic activities are farming, mining and tourism. The district lies in eco –logical regions four and five (IV &V).
Northern Matobo consists of hills which gave birth to the name Matobo. The area houses two great leaders’ graves Mzilikazika Matshobana and Cecil John Rhodes. Njelele, the national rain making shrine is also located here.
Matobo district lies in region 4 & 5 which is erratic dry. The district is having water problems as drilling of borehole is a problem. Despite the dryness the district has 397 borehole and 381 deep wells.Currently we have three solar piped scheme that are benefitting both communities’ business centres, school and clinics.
The scheme stretch to around 4 km from the water source. GULATI PIPED SCHEME (benefiting 30 communities, and Tohwe Primary School 450 pupils).We have 14 clinics and 2 hospitals. Council is prioritising health issues.
There are 82 Primary Schools in the district on which one is a boarding situated 30km from Bulawayo namely REPS which was founded by Rhodes. There are 28 secondary schools in the district on which 3 of them are boarding school.
